About Orlando Deer:
I am a 20-year-old independent musician (and occasionally vocalist) who goes by the stage name, Orlando Deer. The catch is the last 2 syllables are meant to sound like "oh dear". My primary genre is a mixture of folk, lo-fi, electronica, and classical music. I am currently based in Bournemouth, United Kingdom.
In October 2015, Orlando Deer released his debut EP of 4 tracks, titled "Flights of Whimsy". The songs on the EP were inspired by his time in Canada and the people he met there while at an art college in Ontario.
Featured video: Dolphin Under My Man's Chin
The song "Dolphin Under My Man's Chin" was written about a great friend who had a mole on his chin, which resembled a dolphin. Despite how cheery it sounds, the song has a twisted backstory. Throughout his life, "my man" always found himself inevitably surrounded by broken people (the "dolphin"), who would feed off his optimism and clarity, to the extent where it pushed him to the edge of sanity. The video tells the story of "my man", diving into his troubles, over and over again, keeping the dolphins and other creatures in the water entertained, unable to break free from this cycle. The accompanying music has a very carousel-quality, too. I love playing with ironies.
How would you characterize your music style?
Sleepy, quirky, and ethereal.
What do you think is the difference between good music and great music?
"Does the work challenge any popular convention?" Lady Gaga said to me in a dream once. Who am I to say? I do not think that I am in the position to answer this question (yet), but I think artists that create great music are artists that consistently push the creative envelope, the envelope that carries melody, lyrics, production and presentation.
Who is another artist/group your age who you think everyone should listen to?
The Last One Awake. His dedication to performing is so inspiring and admirable. And he has a great, great voice.
What do you think are the biggest challenges of being a young musician?
Definitely finances. The worst is when you have to put a cork on your creative visions because you lack the funds to execute them. It can be quite constricting. For the time being, I am still accumulating the little earnings I can get from my music sales to purchase equipment and props so that I play my music live.
